Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Lasers

The Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Lasers is an advanced academic programme delivered in partnership with KWLE, Wynyard Aesthetics Academy, London Dental School, and Greater Manchester University.

This programme has been designed for practitioners who wish to progress beyond foundational laser education and develop a deeper academic and clinical understanding of laser technologies in medical and aesthetic practice.

The PGCert integrates scientific laser education, patient management, and clinical risk assessment, providing a structured postgraduate pathway for professionals working with laser and light-based technologies.

Programme Structure

The PGCert in Lasers consists of three academic modules, each addressing a key component of safe and effective laser practice.

Module 1 – Reflective laser Practice

This module provides the scientific and technical foundation of laser practice.

It follows the KWLE Diploma in Laser Education, which includes six individual laser education courses delivered by Kevin Williams Laser Expert (KWLE) covering learning from Level 4 through to Level 6.

Students develop an advanced understanding of:

  • Laser physics and photonics
    • Light–tissue interaction and selective photothermolysis
    • Laser safety principles
    • Clinical applications of laser and light technologies
    • Treatment parameters and device selection

This module establishes the scientific framework required for advanced laser practice.

Module 2 – Patient Management

This module focuses on the clinical management of patients undergoing laser treatments, ensuring practitioners develop the knowledge required to deliver safe and effective care.

The module is delivered by Dr. Brian Franks.

Students explore:

  • Patient consultation and clinical assessment
    • Treatment planning and informed consent
    • Identifying appropriate treatment indications
    • Managing patient expectations
    • Clinical documentation and professional standards

This module emphasises the importance of structured patient management within laser practice.

Module 3 – Risk Assessment

This module examines the identification, evaluation and management of risk in laser practice.

It is delivered by Professor Jonny Herron, providing advanced academic insight into clinical safety and governance.

Topics include:

  • Risk assessment in laser treatments
    • Identifying potential treatment hazards
    • Preventing adverse outcomes
    • Clinical governance and safety protocols
    • Evidence-based approaches to risk management

This module supports practitioners in maintaining high standards of safety and professional responsibility when working with laser technologies.

Academic Progression in Laser Education

The PGCert in Lasers provides a clear academic progression route for practitioners wishing to move from professional laser education into postgraduate academic study.

Students entering the PGCert will normally have completed the KWLE Diploma in Laser Education, which provides the core scientific and clinical foundation required for postgraduate learning.

Partnership

The PGCert in Lasers is delivered in collaboration with:

  • Greater Manchester University
    • Wynyard Aesthetics Academy
    • London Dental School
    • Kevin Williams Laser Expert (KWLE)

This partnership combines academic expertise, clinical education and specialist laser training.
